Introduction: Some functional neuroendocrine tumours (NETs) secrete serotonin, leading to the symptoms of carcinoid syndrome (e.g. diarrhoea and flushing). In this condition, increased urinary concentrations of the serotonin metabolite 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) are often detected.
